Where is the left?
Okay, I need to know. How do they get away with it?
First, Gore concedes in the first election. Then, Bush takes us to war under false pretenses. Then we stay at war after declaring it mission accomplished. Then, they win an election? The leak of the CIA operative. Invade Iraq but not Iran or North Korea? The Hurricane Katrina debacle. Now Cheney shoots a friend.
How does all of this happen without somebody... anybody... stepping up and really calling them out?

Here's my take on (portions of)the left and the Democrats.
What this country needs ...
...is a stong/ responsible democratic party. One that can win on a national scale.
And this is coming from a Republican. Or at least, a fiscal conservative.
The state of affairs within the Democratic party has left us with Republicans in charge of both the presidency and the house, and an almost filibuster proof majority in the Senate. I should be happier about this, but I'm not because the Republicans have gotten complacent, and take for granted.
Example: Bush has been president for 5 years and hasn't vetoed a single bill. How could he? I suppose it just wouldn’t do to veto a bill that comes out of a Congress controlled by his own party. He threatened to veto the Highway Bill last year if it topped a certain amount. It ended up being 30 to 40 billion more, and he signed it anyway.
I’m beginning to think the days of gridlock – with Democrats and Republicans each in charge of one of the two political branches – were the good old days. The system worked better when Congress’s natural tendency to spend for constituents was kept in check by a president who could at least pretend look out for the national interest and make a show of standing up for limited government.
But the Democrats have been steadily losing since 1994. I can’t see them making significant gains until the candidates take more moderate positions, get stronger on national security and come up with real solutions to today’s problems (I’m thinking Social Security – where they were simply content to defeat Bush’s proposal without even suggesting one of their own).
Just my 2 cents. Thought you might appreciate a little diversity of opinion in here! :)
Funny thing is there doesn't seem to be much of a difference in opinions here.
More moderate view points, more honesty, more checks and balances... they all seem pretty good, but is it achievable?
If anything it seems like we need less of the two-party system and more of the no-party system.
Imagine a nation where our leaders are chosen based on their person and not their party. You may call me a dreamer...
