Where I will leave this

The 2004 election is almost one week behind me, and it has taken that amount of time for me to really think that I have anything concise to say about it.

The day after the election felt helpless. Every day prior, there was a sense that I could do soemthing. I could go out and knock on doors, I could raise money, I could write. Now, there is absolutely nothing I can do.

November 2nd stands as a tremendous one way tunnel. It's like the cap on a vacuum tube, only letting air move in one direction. And now all of the air is sucked out of that effort.

There has been a lot of talk, or mutterings about what we should do next. I have watched people who are depressed and shell-shocked. Most of them look like they don't know what to do. Some will admit they don't know what to do. Some will offer up rally cries for 2008. But it is really hard right now, to pick ourselves up.

Honestly, I would like to say, "Hey, let's not let this one bring us down. Let's start right now for the future. Let's keep an ever watchful eye on Bush and record every mistake." But honestly, I just want a break.

So I am going to try to distance myself from all of this for a bit. Not the people I met, but the experience itself. Perhaps some greater wisdom will come in time. But for now I need, and many others do too, to switch their life from election mode, back to life mode, and take care of those stacks of back burner priorities.

I will say I am not hopeful for the next four years. I will say that I am uncertain if I will be involved in politics again. But I will be paying attention, and I won't forget this.

Yes, let's start right now for the future.

We need to work for justice in the coming tax code, in finding the right language for our message and in building a message machine to deliver our message.

Learn the issues, get trained in persuasion and exercise channels to deliver our message.

Take a break and watch Frontline tonight at 9pm on PBS to learn about the language of persuasion.

Don't give up, Ben. It's time to breathe, for all of us. Drive to Belle Isle, walk through one of the Metroparks, visit the DIA, volunteer at a homeless shelter, read a Calvin and Hobbes book, do something that makes you laugh or cry.

The day in 2003 when we invaded Iraq I was accompanying some middle school students as they sang to a group of visiting Japanese teachers. Ironically they were singing a rendition of "Ode to Joy" called "Ode to Peace". I cried through the whole song for the world, as America seemed to represent everything but peacemaking that day. I resolved to fight what was happening.

I don't know your reasons for getting involved with this campaign, but I'll tell you mine. America and the principles it was founded upon are worth fighting for. We owe it to the soldiers in Iraq, the suffragists who fought for our right to vote, the children in our country who deserve a decent education. George Bush and his corrupt administration will be gone in 4 years. We need to continue the work of speaking out for what is right. We need to support honorable candidates. We need to fight against the dishonest, bigoted, and self-serving bullies who would have us believe that we should fear each other. George Bush said one thing right in the debates: "It's hard work." But it's worth doing.

For the last week, I've been painting a room in my house with all 9 of Beethoven's symphonies blasting from my stereo. No TV. I feel better. Listen to Air America. Listen to Ed Schulz. Watch the Daily Show. Resolve to never watch another FOX News program. Ever. It's not over, and we're not going down without a fight.
